Wood Pole Inspection & Life Extension

Wood pole inspection and life extension is designed to identify and treat distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission wood poles.

Having a strong pole inspection and maintenance program can double the life of that asset and overall pole infrastructure. Furthermore, preventative maintenance identifies problem areas before a potential incident or failure occurs.

While going through the Inspection process, asset information is logged electronically stating the vintage, class, height, make, and wood species. To establish the overall health and hardware integrity of the asset a visual inspection is performed, pole sounding is performed to assess for voids above grade, and drilling holes test for decay below grade.

A complete understanding of the inspection is crucial in assessing the asset, although a test inspection can be performed without treatment, a complete program for prolonged asset life is  best using a treatment process which can be performed above and below grade using wood preservatives in the form of wraps, pastes, and internal treatments which will prevent any further specific types of damage.

The asset information and treatment is logged into a database and tagged to identifying the year treated, company, and treatment(s) preformed.

Wood Pole Restoration with Steel Stubbing

Pole Restoration is an option for many utilities use when their asset is found to have minor defects during the inspection process, but the asset strength has been comprised. If a pole falls below the utility acceptable standard, the pole is considered a “reject” or “fail” and must be either replaced or restored.

Replacement costs are very expensive and, in most cases, cost the utility more money than the pole itself. A pole restoration is an excellent way for the utility to prolong the life of their asset with a lot less cost.

Restoring the pole is completed by a contoured steel plate being driven below grade, flush against one side of the pole and then banded around the pole using steel bands and clamps.

Asset Fire Protection

Every year, fires destroy tens of thousands wood poles costing the utility millions of dollars each year. Many utilities are now turning to preventative fire protection on their assets to add a safety layer to their wood pole assets. Heartwood Services specializes in the installation of a Fire Mesh wrap, designed to protect wood products by forming a barrier of protection that stops the spread of flames.

The Fire Mesh product is flexible, easy to use intumescent coated mesh that can be applied at any time to any type of wood product.
